Large diameter - the big solution to big problems

Surprisingly light, large size cylindrical formwork with superior smooth finishes can be obtained at a much cheaper price than alternatives. It is also up to 50% lighter.

Consystex columns are manufactured out of non-hazardous materials and do not emit any form of odour. No components of the column should be however exposed to fire or hazardous materials. This can result in affect its structural integrity.

Weatherproof characteristics allow Consystex Columns to withstand natural temperature changes, moisture, humidity and extreme weather conditions will not affect its structural integrity.  However, if columns are subject to any exaggerations of these elements please contact our quality control department to ensure that the columns are in usable condition.

‍Care should always be maintained with the use of columns. The less exposure to water, dirt and poor handling will create a higher quality result and maximise performance.

Handling of Consystex Columns

Transportation

Consystex columns can optimise maximum space in transportation as they have a flexible tolerance allowing you to load an average of 30% more columns on a truck .

Due to thin wall structure smaller Diameters can also be placed inside larger columns to optimise space.

Unloading Manually

Consystex columns can be removed manually by sliding columns off the back of the truck. It is recommended that columns are handled with care as if they are thrown off to truck, as this can create unwanted creases which will affect the finish of the column.

Unloading with Crane Aid

In this situation it is advises that the columns are lifted with slings ( we recommend the use of slings as chains can create internal creases which will not affect the strength of the tube but can create unwanted surface marks on the finished concrete). It is also crucial that slings do not over squash the columns, enough pressure to hold them securely will be sufficient and safe.

Storage

Consystex columns are weatherproof and can be left onsite in a horizontal position. Do not over stack columns and ensure that they are held in position be placing timbers on either side of the tubes and stacking them in a pyramid shape. It is recommended to move columns around if they begin to warp after long periods of time. ( columns will not lose strength and will take shape after concrete is placed inside). If placed upright please ensure that columns are secure. Due to its light weight they may be blown over by the wind. ( it is not advised to place columns higher than 3m in an upright position.

Column set up

Columns can be set up for various methods. The most common are listed below. If you require a setup which is not listed below (example submerged, angled please contact our technical department ).

Pour up

Where columns are set up prior to slab they need to be braced and levelled accordingly. We recommend that a circular cut out to the exterior diameter of the Consystex tube is used and place no less than 100mm from the top. This cut out can be supported by 3 bearers to create a tripod like support to aid in the stability of keeping the column level. The bottom of the column can be supported in the same way. If kickers are used please ensure enough spacing to the external diameter as the column will naturally take shape. Ensure top and bottom of the column have a nail placed into support and tube ensuring no lift or movement once levelled

Pour Down

Where columns are installed after deck the top of the column must be nailed to the plywood to ensure column doesn’t move. Please ensure that the cut out is at the correct external diameter to ensure that the column is free to take its shape. On the bottom of the column use a cut out or bearers to put column into correct position. The bottom of the column must have a nail placed into support and tube ensuring no lift or movement once levelled. ( we recommend 2 nails on top and bottom opposite to each other.

Columns for piers and piles

When installing ensure that column is placed without the excess of too much pressure. Columns can be designed to all specified grounds ie sand, water, dirt. It is crucial that columns are not subject to any piling after the installation of the pier column

Cutting of columns

In the case in which columns need to be cut they should be cut using a Stanley knife or equivalent. If the column is lined ensure to retape the liner to column so that no concrete can enter in between. We recommend that all lined columns be order to exact heights to ensure the best quality finish.

If any box outs need to be added or plates we recommend you call our technical department as any form of penetration to the column could affect the strength of the tube. Instructions on re enforcing the column can be given depending on the specification.

Pouring of concrete

Before pouring columns ensure that all bracing is done and signed off by formwork engineer. It is crucial that the concreters pour the column by placing the pump and vibrator as far down as possible. Pouring from the top of the column is not recommended and can lead to damage of the liner and also to the finish of the tube. If the column is not vibrated evenly there is a high chance of honeycombing ( this is with every product on the market and trained concreters understand the practice of pouring vertical elements).

Stripping Columns

All supports should be removed and the column should be clear of any possible interference. A knife can be used to cut a vertical incision from the top to the bottom of the column. Ensure not to much pressure is placed as the purpose is to cut the column only too much pressure can damage surface finish of the concrete.

Once column Is cut peel off and safely place on the ground. Cut the column in desired pieces for ease of handling. Dispose of responsibly in bins.
